About

We are pioneering a unique, multidisciplinary student news organization to recruit more Latinos to journalism and improve coverage of Hispanics. Why? Because the ever-increasing numbers of Latinos in Houston and the U.S. make evident the necessity of a vehicle that will unite our various communities, produce and distribute quality information concerning central issues, and become the medium through which a diversity of voices may be expressed. In addition to being the only Latino college news organization in the city, we are the first and only such association at the University of Houston.

Why Latinos? Latinos are greatly underrepresented in the media. In 2005, there was an estimated 41.3 million Latinos in the U.S., comprising 14% of the total population. Demographers predict we will be the majority minority in the next 50 years.

· The American Society of Newspaper Editors’ annual newsroom census shows the number of Latino journalists working at U.S. dailies is 4.29%

· Latinos in the nation’s TV and radio newsrooms fared worse. The percentage of Hispanic journalists working at local TV stations dropped slightly, from 8.9% in 2003 to 8.7% in 2004.
